CSMCC Round 1 Race Report

Saturday
With a brand new car, we had already done a fair bit of pre season testing however nothing could have prepared us for what happened next. Unfortunately on my second lap, disaster struck and a fire started inside the engine bay. Not the best way to start the season! I was told the flames where quite spectacular from the outside! I’ve still not seen any images from the outside so if you have any footage, please send it my way!
Thank you to the marshals and the rescue team for putting it out as fast as they could as I scrambled to get out. It wasn’t until we got the car back to the garage that we could see the full extent of the damage. The decision was made to use the Minimax Motorsport spare car, Sharron.
Sharron is one of the few remaining cars that were originally built when the Celtic Speed Scottish MINI Cooper Cup started and was originally built by the Ecurie Ecosse team. So no pressure… right?
Qualifying
The weather was terrible, 25 drivers took to the track and I really didn’t know what to expect. I turned 1 lap on Saturday in Sharron to make sure the old girl was still kicking to give the team enough time to prep the car ahead of qualifying. She’s still got it. P3. Result.
Race 1
Conditions where still terrible and visibility was awful. Thankfully, I got a decent start and was already up to P2 before turn 1. A short safety car period allowed me to close the gap to P1 but we held the position until the flag.
Race 2
This time… not the best start and dropped very briefly to P3, a good clean battle with Mark Geraghty Racing all way throughout the race kept me on my toes and couple of side by side moments saw us take another 2nd place as the flag dropped.
Race 3
With the reverse grid, this saw me start 5th. With a decent haul of points, I took it bit easy on the start and moved up to 4th after Mark decided to go rallycross racing running wide at Clarks. A move into the hairpin moved me into 3rd and I stayed there until the end.
Motorsport, it’s definitely full of highs and lows. If you told me I would have had 3 podiums after Saturday’s disaster I would have told you to jog on.
As usual a big THANK YOU to the orange army. You guys are always there when we truly need you and I definitely needed you this weekend.
Minimax Motorsport proved it again why they’re the best team on the grid. They pulled it out of the bag when I needed it most.
It’s weekends like this that make you so thankful for all the support, without the help from my sponsors the season would have already been looking pretty grim. Round 2 is approaching fast and we have a busy few weeks ahead to rebuild the car, Bring it on!
A huge thanks to my sponsors for helping out so much already this year!
